Evacuating during a Flood
Listen to your radio or news station for instructions. There may be a flood warning or a flood watch issue. A flood warning is issued when a particular hazard is “imminent†or already occurring. A flood watch is issued well in advance to alert the public of the possibility of a flood or a particular hazard. If you have been ordered to evacuate, do it immediately. If time permits, turn off all electric circuits at the fuse panel by pulling the main switch, or disconnect all electrical appliances. Shut off gas service at the meter, and turn off water service at the main valve. Evacuation is much simpler and safer before flood waters become too deep for ordinary vehicles to drive through. Leave early enough to avoid being marooned by flooded roads. Take your family and your individual Survival Kit (72 hours or 3 days) with you. Many families pack one very large bag for the entire family, but it is best for each family member to have their own pack individually prepared. Many times circumstances require families to split up, although temporarily. Listen to a battery operated radio for more evacuation instructions. Follow recommended evacuation routes and remember shortcuts may be blocked.
