During an Earthquake

There are certain things you should do during an earthquake. If you are indoors, duck or drop down to the floor. Get under a sturdy piece of furniture, such as a desk or table, or brace yourself in a doorway or corner. Hold on to the piece of furniture you are under and be prepared to move with it. Stay in the same position until the ground stops shaking. If possible, choose a location where you will have air to breathe in case the building collapses around you. Stay inside. The most dangerous thing you can do during an earthquake is to try to leave the building because objects can fall on you. Do not go near windows, fireplaces, wood stoves and heavy furniture or appliances. If you are in a crowded area, take cover and stay where you are. Stay calm and encourage others to do the same. If you are outside, move into the open away from buildings, streetlights and utility wires. Once you are in the open, stay there until the shaking stops.
If you are driving, quickly stop the car and stay inside your vehicle. Try to move to a clear area away from bridges, buildings, trees, overpasses and utility wires. Stay in your car if electrical wires have fallen across your vehicle. Move your car as far out of the normal traffic pattern as possible. Be alert to falling rock and debris if you are in a mountainous area. If you are at the beach, move to higher ground. Once the shaking has stopped, proceed with caution. Avoid bridges or ramps that might have been damaged by the quake.
